Let me tell you a story…
I was lucky enough to inherit a lovely spacious 4 bedroom house in Apollo Bay, with the most lovely view of the beach- a mere 100 meters away… It’s possibly closer than that, actually. It’s unfortunate that my parents are no longer around to enjoy this magical but I am eternally grateful for the legacy they have left me- and now, if I may I’d like to give you the Cliffsnotes on “Menden Haus”
This house that I speak of was my family home, I grew up there, and I have many fond memories of it and the town it is in. It still feels like home-this is a rarity and a treasure.
We came to have this treasure by chance- my parents found this house in the early 80’s as a two bedroom shack, a little ways further down the coast from where they used to go camping. They built on, bit by bit, painstakingly and lovingly, to give themselves, and me, what they’d hoped would be a better life.
Apollo Bay has grown into something of an icon and tourist spot, (those who dare to venture further around the twists and turns of the Great Ocean Rd will know) and it bares little resemblance to the small, quiet, pokey little town I grew up in. The beach is still clean and magnificent, there are still so many natural attractions and wonders, but it far from isolated, and even has a carnival in the summer months.
If I had the opportunity I would happily live down there again in this house, which is still homey, thanks to the long hours and tireless work of my partner Con and I, over the past year and a half.
Unfortunately it’s not practical for us to live there right now, and, so I am renting what we have fondly renamed “Menden Haus” (a tribute to my parents home town in Germany, and to them- for without them I wouldn’t have this tremendous gift) through the premiere holiday rental and real Estate agents, Great Ocean Road Real Estate.
